“Not long after Android 2.1 took over as the dominant version of the OS running on all devices, Android 2.2 – otherwise known as Froyo — has been taken up by a sizable chunk of all Android phones in the wild. Froyo now accounts for 28.7% of all devices running Google’s mobile operating system today. It definitely won’t stop there, as more and more devices are beginning to actually ship with Froyo pre-installed. You can thank the EVO 4G, Droid, Droid 2, and Droid Incredible for the awesome gain Froyo has seen recently. With many upcoming Android phones like the T-Mobile G2, and tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab on their way, we expect to see Froyo’s market share to grow rapidly over the next couple of months. But in the next couple of months we may see Gingerbread released, which will only add more “fragmentation” to the stack of Android. Of course, Google would correct you when you use the word fragmentation, as most of the blockades are from phone makers and carriers, and big G hopes to have this smoothed out with Gingerbread.
