T Mobile SDA Smartphone Review at brighthand.com

Microsoft Puts SideShow on Media Center Remote Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review “The Windows Mobile Smartphone Edition isn’t nearly as much like Windows Mobile for Pocket PCs as you would expect, given the name and the fact that there’s some application compatibility. The WMS flavor operates more like a phone, with a lot of numeric keypad shortcuts. These aren’t required to operate it; you can do pretty much anything with just the main buttons and joystick, but using the shortcuts can dramatically speed up operations. If you went at the device cold, and ignored the names of things like the “Start Menu” and Internet Explorer, you might never notice that the two interfaces are related. While Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC can run Smartphone applications, the reverse isn’t true. If you try to install a PPC application onto the Smartphone, either manually or using an install file, you’ll get a message saying that it’s not compatible. Only apps which are specifically Smartphone compatible will operate. The SDA also comes with the ability to run simple Java applications, called “midlets,” the kind that you find on ordinary phones. I tested it with Opera Mini, as well Google Local. Both ran satisfactorily.” Read this review here:

DualCor UMPC Pricing Revealed : 1500$

“We first talked about the DualCor cPC handheld back in January. The device has the intriguing capability of being able to run both Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and Windows Mobile 5.0. The cPC uses a 1.5GHz VIA C7 processor (which was just announced), 1GB of DDR2 memory and a 40GB hard drive when running Windows XP. There is also a 400MHz Intel Xscale PXA263 version coupled with 128MB RAM/1GB ROM when running Windows Mobile 5.0.After the hype surrounding the initial announcement, we now have pricing information on the DualCor cPC. Our readers’ eyes bulged when we stated that UMPCs would range from $600 to $1,000. They may be even more surprised to learn that the cPC will ring in at well above the $1,500 mark for enterprise users direct from the manufacturer. In fact, to get a cPC from Westwood, you will have to pay $1,500 plus an additional $500 bucks (although Westwood does throw a three year warranty in with the deal).$2,000 seems like a hefty price to pay for a “do everything” device. If both operating systems are so important to people, a separate PocketPC used in conjunction with a Tablet PC or UMPC seems like a much cheaper and effective alternative. But then again, it seems as though convergence is the name of the game these days.” via dailytech.com

Nokia Wins Three Top Awards by the UK's Mobile Magazine

Microsoft Puts SideShow on Media Center Remote Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review “Nokia swept the board at this year’s Mobile News Awards held in London, winning the awards for Manufacturer of the Year, Most Innovative Product and Most Technologically Advanced Product. The judging panel of industry experts awarded Nokia the coveted title of Manufacturer of the Year as a result of its bold moves in 2005. These included its launch of the Nokia Nseries sub-brand, its entrance into new territories through its music and youth platforms, the re-claiming of its design leadership and the creation of a new field sales force. Nokia also picked up the Most Innovative Product award for the Nokia N91. This device has been recognised as a true mobile music experience and is the flagship music device from the groundbreaking high performance multimedia Nokia Nseries range. The Nokia N91 is the first 3G device to include an integrated 4-gigabyte hard disk providing consumers with the largest storage capacity on a handset with up to 3,000 songs and 12.5 hours worth of unparalleled sound quality. Nokia was also presented with the Most Technologically Advanced Product award for the Nokia N92. The Nokia N92 is the world’s first integrated DVB-H mobile device and represents a significant leap forward for both the mobile and television industries. With DVB-H television services set to launch globally in 2006, the Nokia N92 provides an indication of how people will be consuming live television on the move in the future. Commenting on the win Mats Wolontis, Managing Director of Nokia UK, said: “Everyone at Nokia worked very hard in 2005 to cement our position as the number one manufacturer and to produce cutting edge devices such as the Nokia N91 and Nokia N92. It’s great to receive recognition for this hard work – especially when it originates from our colleagues in the mobile industry.” via phonemag.com

Toshiba reveals first portable DVD player with TV tuner

“With the increasing popularity and affordability of personal media players (PMPs), I’m personally a little surprised that portable DVD players still have enough of a pull in the marketplace to be a viable option for many consumers. I guess it’s quite a bit easier for travellers on the go who don’t want to bother with ripping the video from their collection. Toshiba is trying to breathe new life into the aging technology by producing a portable DVD player that has an integrated digital TV tuner, an industry first. The SD-P30DT comes with component video outputs, so you can connect it to you huge plasma television when you get home from your business trip, but even while you on the plane, the 9-inch widescreen display (800 x 480 pixels) is more than adequate for your on-the-go movie watching experience. The 170-degree viewing angle isn’t anything to sneeze at either, allowing you to share the experience with whoever’s on the bus beside you.It won’t come cheap, however, as the Toshiba SD-P30DT portable DVD player will weigh in at $609USD when it starts shipping this May. For that price, I’d rather put in a little extra and get my hands on a notebook computer.” via mobilemag.com

The smartphone is dead, long live the phone

The phone inherits the future“Having established that I’m a bit late to do a ‘Predictions for 2006’ article, I’d like to stake my claim to the very first ‘Predictions for 2007’ (and beyond) piece! But first that dramatic headline. The smartphone is dead, long live the phone. Come to think of it, the iPod will be dead shortly afterwards as well. And within a few years the camcorder. The desktop PC will fall as well, but that’s perhaps ten years away. It’s inevitable, you see. Despite those sulking in the corner, proclaiming that they prefer ‘two (or even three) box solutions’, convergence is marching ahead regardless. The phone inherits the futureIt would have been just as easy for telephony to have been integrated into something else popular, such as an iPod (or similar), but the fact is that the ‘phone’ got there first. As of about five years ago, just about every human being on the planet over the age of 10 (and, increasingly, a large number under that age) owns a compact, multifunctional piece of high-tech – a phone. So sales figures of 50 million iPods pale into insignificance besides phone sales (into the billions).” Read this interesting article at allaboutsymbian.com

Samsung X828 is the slimmest phone now

“Just not too long ago we reported the slim series from VK Mobile which is at 8.8mm thick, Samsung X828 grab the first place again for now with 6.9mm thickness! We are not only getting a credit card size phone, but also a credit card thickness phone! When the first Motorola v3 announced, there isn’t any camera or fancy features with it. Now putting on more features on slim phone is an easy task for phone maker. Samsung X828 is as slim as 6.9mm, and it also comes with a 2 megapixel camera, 1.9″ 262k colors screen, 80MB internal memory and bluetooth! The battery is still good at this thickness, you can change the battery as it is not attached with the back cover and it is not built in to the phone too.Samsung is at its very best to slim everything down, except the camera module. The camera module is thicker than 6.9mm at the top of the phone, although it is only a small part of the body. Currently the Samsung X828 is available for CDMA network only, no words on the GSM availability.” More X828 photos at slashphone.com
